Keynote Reception and Address by Alison Brown
In her scheduled address, “Four and a Half Things I’ve Learned,” the Compass Records co-founder will share insights she’s gained over the past 25 years at the helm of one of roots music’s most successful independent labels: “I had the honor of giving the IBMA keynote address 17 years ago. Although we weren’t aware of it at the time, we were in the waning days of the record business as we knew it,” said Brown. “Since then, the music industry has undergone a radical transformation in the way music is sold and consumed. All of the players in the ecosystem – from the record labels to the retailers to the artists and the fans – have been affected. I look forward to sharing some of my thoughts about where we are at this juncture and how to keep bluegrass music healthy and thriving in the current landscape.”

Henhouse Prowlers
Founded over 15 years ago with the simple desire to play original and powerful bluegrass, this quartet now finds themselves at the intersection of performance, diplomacy and education.
The Prowlers have now been to more than 25 countries across the globe, working with the U.S. State Department and under their own nonprofit, Bluegrass Ambassadors - incorporating music from Africa, Asia, the Middle East and more into their already robust repertoire of unique original and traditional American music.
On stage, in workshops and wherever they are, the Henhouse Prowlers find and spread the commonality we share as human beings through the universal language of music.

Bluegrass Museums - An Economic Development Tool
Rural areas face significant economic development challenges, particularly locations that are attempting to enhance the local tax base with new job providers.  Some of these are more successful than others.   When successfully planned and executed, they create direct economic improvements in local jobs, government revenue and civic pride that are measurable.  Bluegrass music is a compelling strategy when the project is developed appropriately.  This panel will discuss the challenges and benefits of bluegrass music museums.

The Price Sisters released their Rebel debut in 2016, a seven-song EP recorded and produced by Bil VornDick in Nashville. The girls were accompanied on the recording by Charlie Cushman, Mike Bub, Ronnie McCoury, Dustin Benson and Alan Bartrum. Cane Mill Road
Growing up just down the road from Doc Watson, Billboard-charting artists Cane Mill Road rock the traditional bluegrass standards they were raised on, yet boldly write original music with roots in the fertile grounds of bluegrass, old-time, blues, jazz, and Americana. The four young men roam the Blue Ridge Mountain backroads driving between Deep Gap, NC, and Rocky Gap, VA to meet and make music- thus the title track of the band’s latest Gap to Gap. The title signifies more than just the long hours on the road touring, but the spaces between the bluegrass foundation of the band’s youth and the new spaces of music they create together. Honoring the past, the band looks to the future with a blended set of traditional and contemporary music. The band’s new live album will debut this summer. Peers in the bluegrass community voted Cane Mill Road as one of the five nominees for the International Bluegrass Music Association’s Momentum Band of the Year for 2018. Cane Mill Road’s banjo player, Tray Wellington, was nominated for IBMA’s Momentum Instrumentalist of the year. From internationally in Argentina to stateside across the country, Cane Mill Road plays the most festivals including Wide Open Bluegrass, MerleFest, Grey Fox, Delaware Valley, Silver Dollar City, Ogden Music Festival, Outer Banks BGF, Bristol Rhythm & Roots, Carolina in the Fall, Shakori Hills, OcraFolk... just to name a few. The band’s first two albums have spent 7 weeks on Billboard’s Bluegrass Album Charts, both debuted in the top 10. The band is sponsored by: Deering Banjos, GHS Strings, Sorensen Mandolin & Guitar Company, Kogut Violins, Shubb Capos, NS Design, and MiniFlex Microphones.

Nixon, Blevins & Gage
Nixon, Blevins & Gage continue to entertain audiences with their presentation of the emerging genre of the acoustic trio. Loosely based in bluegrass, they bring thumb-picking, early country music popularized by Doc Watson and Merle Travis. A recent review from the Raleigh News & Observer noted, "the juxtaposition of Nixon's finger-style playing with guitarist David Blevins' flat-picking (resulting) in an acoustic ambiance reminiscent of Doc Watson…, John Hurt and Etta Baker.” To date they have released five albums and received popular acclaim from Bluegrass Unlimited, Bluegrass Today and County Records. Venues played include Merlefest, North Carolina Museum of History, Raleigh City Plaza, IBMA World of Bluegrass, Home Town Opry, Pullen Park, Cary’s Bond Park, Holly Springs Cultural Center, Durham Centerfest and regular appearances at local venues.

David Davis & The Warrior River Boys
A member of The Alabama Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame, Alabama native David Davis has traveled and performed as frontman for the bluegrass group David Davis and the Warrior River Boys since 1984. He is recognized as one of the foremost practitioners of the Monroe mandolin technique. His interest in old-time and bluegrass music grew organically from a musical family; both his father and grandfather were players and singers, and his uncle Cleo Davis was one of Bill Monroe’s original Blue Grass Boys. After years of touring coast-to-coast and watching the remaining first-generation masters “live and up-close” at major festivals and hallowed halls, the group signed with Rounder Records in 1989. One of the first pieces of advice Ken Irwin gave them was, “You have a great Bill Monroe thing going; now you should work at creating your own identity.” It was hard to understand at that time in the group’s musical development — kind of a curve ball to the youngsters who prided themselves at playing Bill’s style so faithfully. The future is in the roots. By going back in time, they move forward, growing those roots into a magical potion of ingredients old and new.

Steve Gulley & New Pinnacle
Steve Gulley had already won esteem for his lofty tenor voice and emotional delivery as an entertainer at Kentucky’s historic Renfro Valley well before he joined Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver, which brought him to a wider but no less appreciative audience. Gully was also a founding member of Mountain Heart, recording five award-winning projects while serving as the band’s lead vocalist, followed by a five-year stint as frontman of Grasstowne. These days he is a stalwart of the very top echelon of lead and tenor singers in bluegrass, and also a gifted songwriter and guitarist. He was tapped as vocalist on the widely praised Keith Whitley album “Sad Songs And Waltzes” and other projects featuring Ronnie Bowman, Dan Tyminski, Tim Stafford, Dwight McCall, Dale Ann Bradley, Jeff Parker and country singer Ken Mellons. His songs have been recorded by top acts including Blue Highway, Kenny & Amanda Smith and Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver. “Through the Window of a Train,” which Guelley co-wrote with Tim Stafford, won IBMA Song Of The Year for 2008. Brandon Lee Adams
Brandon Lee Adams is an up and coming artist from the mountains, hills and valleys of Appalachia. Tracing his musical roots from traditional gospel music all the way to folk, bluegrass, jazz and blues, he never assumes one clear path or direction but moves where the music leads. After recordings with iconic artists including Carl Jackson, Scott Vestal and IBMA Hall of Famer Tony Rice, appearances on two Grammy-nominated albums and the IBMA Award-winning album “Celebration of Life,” Adams has laid a solid foundation for a long career. He’s always looking to bring music that is "From a real place inside of me." Lyrics and melody are always at the root of every note. Seeing himself more as a story teller who happens to play an instrument, he finds no comfort in any kind of a box. Listening to everything and holding only to what "stays," Adams is on a path with no defined end.

Chatham Rabbits
It's been about music from the get go. Austin and Sarah McCombie crossed paths in 2013 when he spotted her onstage at the Cat's Cradle while opening for Mandolin Orange. He didn't know much about old-time music and she didn't know much about him, but they figured it out. Music is the reason they met. It's their pasttime and gift they give to others. Chatham Rabbits have played smokey bars and summer festivals, busked on the streets of Nashville ‘til their voices wore out, put a tune to the love at their best friends' wedding and led churches in old-time hymns way past time for Sunday lunch. This past summer, Austin and Sarah decided to leave their corporate careers to take Chatham Rabbits full-time. They knew they would regret it if they never gave their music a shot. They tour full-time in our van with their hound dog Ruby and are so thankful for the life they’re living. It’s not always easy, but so far it’s been worth it. If they haven’t already, they hope to see you at a show soon.

Shannon Baker’s vocals are the highlight of the group. She brings bluegrass selections alive with power and finesse. Country, Americana, gospel, folk and other numbers are delivered with heartfelt soul and nuance far beyond her years. Joining her in the group are three with years of bluegrass band heritage along with acoustic experience outside the genre. The harmony vocals of Brent Wiggins are a perfect complement, but he also delivers a well crafted lead on several numbers and adds mandolin/guitar. Ronnie Parrish weaves a smooth line on the acoustic bass that draws everything together, and John Dudley adds banjo/guitar and harmony vocal. You’ll hear foot tapping numbers with strong three part harmony, moving, soulful renditions and some
in between. Plenty to put a smile on your face.

Kids on Bluegrass
The Kids on Bluegrass program spotlights the talents of young bluegrass musicians and singers, ages 4 to 17, at the IBMA’s annual Wide Open Bluegrass Festival. The program matches kids of similar abilities, offering the opportunity to create and arrange music instrumentally and vocally, and to perform in a group of their peers. Many Kids on Bluegrass alumni have gone on to become professional musicians, including Sierra Hull, Sarah Jarosz, Casey Campbell, Cory Walker, Nick Keen, Alex Hargreaves, Seth Taylor, Molly Tuttle, Austin Ward, Christian Ward, Gaven Largent and Cory Piatt. More than a workshop or “academy” experience, the program’s goals are to provide guidance, and to foster a fun atmosphere for producing, performing, promoting, and even emceeing a professional bluegrass music show. Kids on Bluegrass plays two separate sets at the Wide Open Bluegrass Festival, Friday evening and Saturday morning. In both sets each child is a featured musician, performing one or two songs of his or her choice.

Bowman, Bowman & Dre
When Ronnie Bowman, Garnet Bowman and Dré Anders sang together for the first time at DelFest, it was a perfect fit -- so the McCoury family festival can take credit for launching another new group. The vocal trio features Ronnie, the hit songwriter and former lead singer of The Lonesome River Band; Garnet, his partner in life and in-demand Nashville session singer; and Anders, Swedish-born folksinger and founder/lead vocalist of Dré and The Collective. Together, their harmonies evoke the folk music of the 70's, peace, love and songs with something to say. From age 3, Ronnie Bowman has been performing music. Starting in a family band, he eventually joined the acclaimed bluegrass band The Lost & Found before moving on to The Lonesome River Band, joining in time to record 1991 IBMA album of the year “Carrying the Tradition.” Garnet Bowman started her music career in Nashville as a session singer, becoming one of the top go-to vocalists in town. In the last few years she has exclusively sung and traveled with her favorite singer, Ronnie. Swedish-born Anders is a product of a famous musical family (her father is honored on a postage stamp and her brother is a producer for “Glee”).

Blue Canyon Boys
The Blue Canyon Boys are equal parts purists and innovators when it comes to bluegrass: they stay true to the form’s roots while constantly reimagining their relationship to tradition. The result is a toe-tapping mix of haunting standards, genre-bending arrangements, and catchy original numbers—all built on the bedrock of their collective bluegrass mastery. Founding members Jason Hicks and Gary Dark launched the Blue Canyon Boys in 2006 with seamless brother-duet style, crisp instrumentation, unvarnished lyrics and subversive humor. After winning first place 2008 Telluride Bluegrass festival band contest, the Blue Canyon Boys went off at full tilt, taking the bluegrass circuit by storm, performing in illustrious venues across the country as well as internationally. Their distinctive sound, honed from over a decade of performing together, moves easily from instrumental wizardry to playful ribbing. Ultimately and repeatedly, they hit a high note—the rare confluence of harmony that leaves the soul ajar. The seasoned quartet features Gary Dark on mandolin, Jason Hicks on guitar, Drew Garrett on bass, and Chris Roszell on banjo. Their latest album, eponymously called The Blue Canyon Boys, is perhaps their most polished and poignant yet. Classic bluegrass, clean and raw, blends effortlessly with the band’s homegrown compositions, then peppered with a judicious cover or two, such as the band’s riveting take on Pink Floyd’s “Time.”
Whether calling on their old timey musical roots or reconnoitering the future, the band’s musical prowess never wavers. This is high lonesome sound at its best: a driving pulse that weaves through harmonies and fierce rhythms, always with the reminder that as long as the music plays we are never quite alone.

Dave Adkins Band
There is no mistaking the raw and powerful vocals by singer, songwriter and guitarist Dave Adkins. His significant chart success, coupled with stellar live performances, have made him one of most talked-about male vocalists in acoustic music. Adkins was born in Pikeville, Kentucky and makes his home in Elkhorn City. He began playing and singing when he was just 8 years old and joined a band with fellow classmates performing at schools and other venues. At 17, he began playing bluegrass music at Dollywood where he stayed two years. A year later, Adkins was named a Kentucky Colonel – the highest title of honor bestowed by the Commonwealth of Kentucky. Commissions for Kentucky colonels are given by the governor and the secretary of state to individuals in recognition of noteworthy accomplishments and outstanding service to a community, state or the nation. He is also a proud Mason and Shriner. After Dollywood, Adkins took a turn doing solo Country shows and later performed with a rock band. In 2010, he returned to the genre that was his first love, bluegrass. Adkins’ soulful vocals earned him a 2013 SPBGMA nomination as Male Vocalist of the Year in the Contemporary category.
