The Carolina Bluegrass Band is one of the newest ensembles on the roster of the music department at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The band performs traditional and contemporary bluegrass and welcomes bluegrass musicians, as well as musicians from other genres who want to cross over and broaden their musical experience. It is open by audition to all students and uses all traditional instruments including acoustic guitar, banjo, fiddle, mandolin, dobro, bass, and vocals. The Carolina Bluegrass Band is part of UNC’s larger Bluegrass Initiative to bring both the study of and performance of bluegrass to the university. The band debuted in November 2016, opening for the Grammy-winning Steep Canyon Rangers in Memorial Hall, and has performed several concerts on and off campus the past three years. The band is directed by Russell Johnson.
