Steve walked into the Old Town Music Store in Chicago, Illinois in 1992 and bought his first mandolin. For 29 years, he led the Steve Pettit Evangelistic Team (1985-2014) where they produced 18 different recordings including sacred, bluegrass, and celtic styles. In 2014, Steve carried his mandolin to Greenville, South Carolina, when he became the president of Bob Jones University. He started jamming with the Skillman sisters and later formed BJUGrass in 2018. BJUGrass is a five-piece bluegrass band from Bob Jones University in Greenville, South Carolina. Made up of four BJU students and the president of the university, BJUGrass members are Madison Skillman (fiddle), Mariah Skillman (guitar), Caleb Rollins (banjo), Anne Smith (bass) and Dr Steve Pettit (mandolin). Madison and Mariah Skillman are sisters from northern California who grew up playing in their family bluegrass band. Madison won her division at the California State Old Time Fiddle Championship in 2006. Mariah won 3 rd place at the 2018 Rocky Grass guitar flat-picking competition. Caleb Rollins grew up in Shelby, NC playing banjo, guitar, mandolin, and bass. Anne Smith (bass) plays on the BJU orchestra and studies cello at the university. BJUGrass plays traditional bluegrass, gospel, and hymns at a variety of venues including dinners, concerts, and churches in North Carolina, South Crolina, and Georgia.
